Changing the world by changing ourselves first has been a reverberating battle cry since the time we cannot easily recall when. We often assume that a simple spark would make the difference to start the unquenchable fire of transformation. And yet, in spite of so many people who have taken the lead just to avert the corrupt status quo, we still find ourselves falling back in our old comfortable worlds made out of social apathy and illusory rooms for greatness.
The requirements on how to be a good citizen have long been enacted through our two decade-old Constitution but as legal excuses try to pool in the confines of the adjudication rooms, that has been, in some instances, ‘an avenue for justice to be served upon payment,’ we discover ourselves grasping for survival.
In times when we do not actually know where we are all geared at, we usually hold on to mere possibilities and we think that mere possibilities are all we have to keep holding on. And yet, what we often neglect is the fact that we are not alone in this wearying situation. We have these ‘significant others’ around us trying to cope up just the same.
In times like this, it is not just really about how we try to inspire the people around us by spearheading social change through our self. It is about working together to overthrow what is necessarily enslaving us. It is about us walking hand in hand towards the attainment of a particular goal. It is about us being united under the banner of achieving a nation built out of an authentic care for everyone.
